Founded in 1979, the West Side Campaign Against Hunger at West End Avenue and 86th Street in Manhattan is a pioneer in innovative strategies of delivering emergency food with dignity. We function as a supermarket-style customer-cooperative where people select food from shelves rather than receiving a prepackaged bundle. Children who come to the pantry see their parents treated as customers not charity recipients. Most important of all, we focus on counseling aimed at meeting long-term needs with on-site access to free or low-cost family health insurance, job training, food stamp registration, ESL classes and many other services.
