WSCAH isn’t just about hunger. We aim to improve all aspects of the lives of our customers. Heidi Ehrich teaches the 15 students in WSCAH’s beginner English as a Second Language class, many of them recent immigrants. Heidi says, “My aim is to help them, in the Spanish phrase, ‘defenderse’–that is to learn how to defend themselves in New York so that they feel comfortable hearing English in any setting–and also saying, no, I need a translator when they don’t understand.” This semester Heidi is working with her students to field-test lesson plans for the new English-learning television show “We Are New York” sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and CUNY. Heidi loves her job: “My students support each other as they learn English. They have formed a community.”

ESL at WSCAH is supported by a grant from the New York City Council sponsored by Council Member Gail Brewer. You can support our work by making a donation here.
